In 1996, Pokemon made its debut on the original Nintendo Gameboy. As 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, Nintendo is releasing a special edition 2DS handheld consoles with pokemon-themed colours and images on the plastic casing of each 2DS. Apparently 3DS will not come in these colours, only 2DS.
Nicole Carpenter of IGN reported the following:
“…February 27—the 20th anniversary of Pokemon Red and Blue. The handhelds come in classic Pokemon colors—red, blue, green, and yellow—and ship with its respective Pokemon game pre-installed.
The 2DS consoles will also feature a themed home menu, stickers, and the game’s region map poster. Players will also receive a download code for the ever-desired Mew. You’ll be able to use the code with your 2DS game, or on Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, and Pokemon X and Y.”
Back in November, Nintendo revealed that the Gameboy Pokemon games would be re-released for the 2DS and 3DS system. Multiplayer battles on Gameboy, Pokemon Red and Blue required a short link cable to connect two Gameboys. Now that the 2DS has wireless internet functionality, players will be able to play Pokemon Red and Blue wirelessly and from farther away, without a restrictive short link cable anymore.
So far, there has been no mention of a North American or European release for the Pokemon themed 2DS consoles, but we expect the release to come sometime in the near future.
Here is the video from Nintendo about the re-release of the Pokemon games on 3ds and 2ds. For those who don’t know 2DS and 3DS all can play the same games. If you are considering buying one, you have have the option to play pokemon on either.
