Bill Hudson has two children with actress Goldie Hawn. But those two children, Oliver and Kate Hudson, weren’t celebrating him this past Father’s Day weekend.
In 1980 the pair divorced after being married for four years. Kate was 2 at the time and Oliver was 4. Goldie soon moved on and for more than 30 years she has been partnered with the amazing Kurt Russell. Both of the Hudson siblings have gone on record stating that Russell is, for all intensive purposes, their father.
Daughter, Kate Hudson, gave an interview to Vanity Fair in 2000 where she spoke openly and unfavorably about her biological dad. She said:
“[Bill Hudson] doesn’t know me from a hole in the wall. But I don’t care. I have a dad [Russell]. The bottom line is, you call your kids on their f–king birthday. I’m glad I had a dad who was there on my birthday.”
A year later Bill Hudson released an autobiographical book called 2 Versions: The Other Side of Fame and Family. The book had lots to say about his children, not all of which was complimentary. An excerpt from Bills book states:
“I love Kate, but … She has done stuff which is just awful. She is a spoiled brat in my eyes and at the end of the day, she should meet her little sister. I should meet my grandchild and she should help her grandmother.”
Their tumultuous relationship wasn’t the focus of Kate’s Father’s Day this year. Instead she decided to celebrate Kurt Russell. She posted a beautiful black and white photo of the two of them on Instagram and captioned the photo with:
“Pa, just simply….. Thank you! Happy Fathers Day I love you to the moon and back. #HappyFathersDay”
Bill Hudson’s ex-wife, Goldie, also took to social media for Father’s Day. She tweeted about her son, Oliver:
“Happy Father’s Day @theoliverhudson you’re simply the best papa! Love”
While the ladies in the family stayed positive, Oliver struggled with the sore subject of celebrating his “dad”. The actor, now 38, took to Instagram on Sunday to express what he was feeling. He posted a photo of himself, his sister Kate and their biological father, Bill. Everyone in the photo looks happy, but the accompanying caption said otherwise:
“Happy abandonment day… @katehudson.”
Although he’s obviously sour about his estranged father, this last March Oliver showed us how grateful he is to have Kurt as a father. He made an Instagram post for his 64th birthday and the caption read:
“Happy birthday to the greatest dad in Santa Monica…I love you more than you realize. Before you came into my life, I was only potential and you made me, forced me, to find my confidence, my independence and strive for the elusive fearlessness that you so matter of factly possess…I look up to you and always will…”
So props to the Hudson/Hawn women for remembering that Fathers Day is all about celebrating, not shaming.
Hopefully for the health of their family the cycle of comments in poor taste can come to an end.
