NBC Cancels Mr. Robinson, Renews The Carmichael Show

NBC has issued verdicts on two of it’s off-season shows, canning one and renewing the other. Mr. Robinson and The Carmichael Show both premiered earlier this year as part of the rainbow peacock’s summer line-up.

Mr. Robinson has been axed after one season. The sitcom starred Craig Robinson (The Office, This is the End) as a musician who takes a job as a substitute teacher. The comedy failed to catch on with viewers or critics, achieving ratings mostly around the 4 million viewer mark over it’s six episode first (and now only) season. The show also starred Ben Koldyke (Back in the Game, Work It), Brandon T. Jackson (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, Tropic Thunder), Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty, Greek), Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games, Sleepy Hollow) and Peri Gilpin (Frasier, Make It or Break It).

The Carmichael Show received a kinder fate however, scoring a second season after its six episode first season run. Starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael (The Goodwin Games, Lucas Bros Moving Co.) as a fictionalised version of himself  the comedy “is inspired by Jerrod’s relationship with his say-anything contrarian father, his therapist-in-training girlfriend, his ever-hustling brother and his mother who is always, always, always right with Jesus,” according to an NBC press release.

In the same press release, President of NBC Entertainment Jennifer Salke is quoted as saying “We’re extremely proud of The Carmichael Show and Jerrod’s voice and point of view is a breath of fresh air in a comedy series. This show made a big impact with viewers and critics because it’s funny and relatable but also because it’s fearless about discussing issues that are significant in the world today.  We appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this new family comedy from the producers, cast, and crew and look forward to bringing it back to the schedule later this season.”

The sitcom also stars Amber Stevens West (22 Jump Street, Greek), LilRey Howery (Friends of the People, Lucas Bros Moving Co), Tiffany Haddish (If Loving You Is Wrong, A Christmas Wedding), Loretta Devine (Grey’s Anatomy, Boston Public) and David Alan Grier (In Living Color, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil).
