ISIS Attacked by Computer Hackers

Computer hackers are often stereotyped as those who commit internet crime, while Hactivism is defined as computer hackers fighting for a noble cause. Ghost Security Group and Anonymous are Hacktivist groups that have both declared war against ISIS.

According to Laurie Segall from KSPR, the Ghost security group made up of former Anonymous members, has hacked ISIS twitter accounts, and by doing so, they may have helped to prevent bombings and other ISIS attacks. The following excerpt comes from Segall’s article:

“In July, a threat emerged from an ISIS-associated Twitter account with few followers. The account alluded to an upcoming terror attack at a beach resort in Tunisia….

….investigators used Ghost Security’s info to identify a target site, who they were targeting, and how they would execute the attack. The investigation ended with the arrest of more than a dozen terror suspects, Smith said.

‘Without a doubt, this group has saved lives. At least into the dozens,’ Smith told CNNMoney. ‘There are people working in the national security community in the United States, Europe, the Middle East … who will never be credited with that.’

FBI Director James Comey has repeatedly said that ISIS’ use of social media is unprecedented in terms of how aggressively it engages with people in the West. Its members are essentially overwhelming the system, Smith said, which means there’s room for outside support from groups like Global Security….

…Ghost Security has taken down 149 Islamic State propaganda sites, 110,000 social media accounts, and over 6,000 propaganda videos since it formed…”

Meanwhile, Anonymous had released information on planned ISIS attacks set to happen today:

“… it has uncovered information about Islamic State group attacks in Paris as well as at locations in the U.S., Indonesia, Italy and Lebanon, all apparently set for Sunday. OpParisIntel,…

…Anonymous also said the Islamic State group is planning an assault at the WWE Survivor Series event scheduled to take place in the Philips Arena in Atlanta Sunday at 7.30 p.m. EST, as well as attacks at multiple events in Paris.

The targets listed by Anonymous are as follow:

  • Cigales Electroniques with Vocodecks, RE-Play & Rawtor at Le Bizen (Paris)
  • Concrete Invites Drumcode: Adam Beyer, Alan Fitzpatrick, Joel Mull at Concrete (Paris)
  • Demonstration by Collectif du Droit des Femmes (Paris)
  • Feast of Christ the King celebrations (Rome/Worldwide)
  • Al-Jihad, One Day One Juz (Indonesia)
  • Five Finger Death Punch (Milan)
  • University Pastoral Day (Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon)”

According to IBtimes, The FBI responded by saying they have not found credible information to suggest these attacks will actually happen at the WWE event.

When will the threat of ISIS end or when will it be minimized? It is scary that these attacks are happening on a regular basis.  Are Americans and other nations doing all they can to stop the threat?  Is there more they can do?  Thankfully Hactivists are volunteering their time to help fight this war.
