Google Obtains Patents for “Smart” Dolls

Watch out Hasbro, looks like google is your newest competitor.

Looks like Internet connected dolls and teddies are the a part of the next big technology wave, Not long after cognitoys connecting to IBM’s supercomputer Watson and Barbie’s new Wi-Fi connection. Google as recently received a patent for interactive dolls and teddy bears, the patent states the use of dolls to control media devices. They would react to social cues, and “turn their attention” to the user and await to execute voice commands.

The toys would be equipped with sensors, cameras, speakers and motors. As if we needed another reason to have a reasonable fear of dolls coming alive and murdering us.

It is likely that Google has no plans to make internet connected toys, stating in an email to CNN Money that “We hold patents on a variety of ideas – some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t”

But I can’t be completely skeptical of the idea, it’s a great tool for children to learn with, as well as for parents to keep an eye on their house while on vacation, etc. I also have to admit that if Google and DC find a cooperative agreement to release “Smart” Batman action figures, you best believe I’m first in line. Who wouldn’t want a batman voiced Siri?? But until that happens, I’ll just have to be content with Cortana, and the bliss I have from feeling like Master Chief.

The move isn’t a surprise following Cognitoys, who started a kickstarter campaign which had great success, and are putting the finishing touches on the intelligent Toy.

We live in a technological world, and it looks like it’s having more of an effect on the current (and future) children already, but I can’t help but not be delighted that there’s a possibility that my future children, nieces and nephews, etc.) might not have the joy of playing Monopoly in the livingroom with their parents like I used too.
