Dying ‘Star Wars’ fan sees new film a month early

A dream has come true for ultimate Star Wars fan Daniel Fleetwood.

32-year-old Daniel, who resides in Houston, Texas, was diagnosed with spindle cell carcinoma in 2012–a rare type of cancer that starts in either the skin or in tissues that line internal organs. In July, he was told that over 90% of his lungs are filled with tumors and was given just two months to live.

Daniel has been a Star Wars fan since the age of eight when his father first showed him the movies, and after hearing how much time he has left, he became worried that chances are he might not be able to see the newest installment of the franchise–Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has a release date of December 18th.

He then took to social media for help–starting a Twitter campaign with the hashtag #ForceForDaniel with his college sweetheart and wife of five years Ashley, hoping to get the attention of Disney and Lucasfilm to allow Daniel to see the film a month early, which was his final wish.

“If I got to see the movie, I might actually die of happiness,” Daniel told PEOPLE Magazine on Tuesday. “Growing up, I would watch the movies over and over again and analyze every little detail. I hope I get to see what happens.”

#ForceForDaniel went viral almost immediately, even catching the attention of Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca, and John Boyega, who plays Finn. On Thursday, his dream came true.

“To all our wonderful supporters, friends, family and awesome strangers: Daniels final dream was just granted!!! Today the wonderful Disney, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm teams made his final wish come true, Daniel just finished watching an unfinished version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!!!” Wife Ashley announced to Facebook on Thursday. “We would like to thank the awesomely talented JJ Abrams for calling us yesterday to tell us Daniel was getting his wish granted!”

Although he can’t disclose any information on the film, thousands of fans on the Internet are showing their love and support and are happy that he got the chance to see it. Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theatres December 18.
