Harry Potter, boy wizard, is set to return. This time, not on the page or in the movies, but rather in the theatre. Author of the hit Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, announced on Twitter that a new play will be hitting the London stage in 2016.
In her tweet, Rowling revealved that she has collaborated with writer Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. Without wanting to share too many details, Rowling tweeted, “I don’t want to tsay too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans, however, I can say that it is not a prequel!”
Rowling has previously received numerous offers to carry Harry Potter onward. This time around, she felt that the play was the only proper outlet for a new Harry Potter saga.
The play, titled “The Cursed Child” is set to open in the summer of 2016 at the Palace Theatre in London. Tickets will begin selling in fall of 2015.
Although Rowling had previously toyed with plans for a theatrical production of Harry Potter a few years ago, this time it’s the real deal.
The huge success of Harry Potter has evolved in the form of seven novels, totalling over 450 million copies sold world-wide, with a film franchise grossing over $7 billion.
It doesn’t stop at the books, films and theatre for Rowling. She is planned to debut her screenwriting skills with a Harry Potter spin-off titled “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. The film will showcase Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as the lead character.
Harry Potter fans must be going crazy. The magic they’ve all been waiting for (the return of Harry Potter) has finally happened!
