Screech won’t be “Saved By The Bell” this time!
Last winter Dustin Diamond, the 1990`s geeky heartthrob, got himself into a little bit of trouble. He was at a bar in Wisconsin with his girlfriend, Amanda Schultz when she was allegedly bumped by another customer and chaos ensued. According to witnesses, the ensuing fight was initiated by Schultz but attention turned to Diamond when he stepped in to protect her with a knife in hand. Diamond reported initially that he was only carrying a pen, but later conceded to the fact that it was a knife. He testified that the stabbing had only occurred accidentally and that the knife was only to intimidate everyone to back off of his girlfriend.
Accident or not, this last Thursday Judge Paul Malloy sentenced Dustin Diamond to four months in prison. The terms of his sentence involve 15 months of probation, maintaining “absolute sobriety” (away from all controlled substances), and to steer clear of the individual he stabbed at the bar in Port Washington, Wis.
Diamond was lucky to be cleared of felony charges after a three day trial last May. His verdict on Thursday was the culmination of considering two misdemeanors he had been charged with after the incident (carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct).
Girlfriend Schultz, despite starting the brawl, only was convicted of a misdemeanor and fined with restitution and court fees up to $500.
At the hearing, Diamond showed heartfelt remorse. He said:
“I sincerely apologize to everyone involved. This was the single most terrifying experience of my life … This is all I’ve been able to think about for the last six months.”
The victim who Diamond (38) stabbed said he did not even recognize an injury until after the fight was done. He told jurors:
“Before the altercation, I was not bleeding or stabbed. After the altercation, I was.”
Screech is slowly becoming notorious for getting himself into trouble. He has released a sex tape, been sued on several occasions for delinquent taxes as well as for missing mortgage payments in foreclosure proceedings.
As ordered, Sunday evening Diamond will report to the prison.
