Subway celebrates National Sandwich Day with free sandwich

Tuesday, November 3, is National Sandwich Day. To celebrate, one of the most recognizable sandwich shops is giving away free sandwiches. Subway is doing a two-for-one sandwich deal with the purchase of a 30 ounce drink.

The offer applies to any of Subway’s six inch sandwiches, with the sub of lesser value being free. The offer is valid at Subway restaurants throughout Canada and the United States.

November 3 is the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Rumor is that the Earl wanted a snack that was easy for him to eat at the gambling table. His servants presented him with a slice of meat between two pieces of bread. The story goes that it was all that the Earl ate for 24 hours, and thus the sandwich was born.

While Subway’s National Sandwich Day offer may be the most publicized, many other restaurants are getting in on the action as well. Arby’s restaurants in Tennessee are offering a free Classic Roast Beef sandwich to people who purchase a drink and sign up for their email list. The sandwich is available for 99 cents (with a limit of 20 per customer) for those who don’t want to sign up for the email list.

McDonalds is offering a free sandwich to anyone who downloads their app. Anyone who lives near a Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop can download their app for a chance to win free subs for a year.

For those who aren’t looking to get in on free sandwiches, today is still a great day to enjoy a tasty sandwich and celebrate the fact that someone had the brilliant, delicious idea of putting meat between two slices of bread.
