STX Dates Two New Movies

Film company STX has issued release dates for two of its upcoming films: The Free State of Jones and The Space Between Us. The former is actually a delay, having been originally scheduled to premiere on March 11, 2016; it will now debut on May 13, 2016, pitting it against a pretty packed slate of competitors including Captain America: Civil War, The Angry Birds Movie, Neighbors 2, Alice Through the Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse.

The Free State of Jones, directed and written by four-time Academy Award nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit), is inspired by the true story of Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer who led a group of anti-slavery Confederate Army deserters during the American Civil War. Called Knight Company, the men (according to local legend) attempted to form the “Free State of Jones” in Jones County, Mississippi during the war.

The film is headlined by Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey (True Detective, Interstellar) in the role of Newton Knight and also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Jupiter Ascending, Odd Thomas), Golden Globe winner Keri Russell (The Americans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1), three time Golden Globe nominee Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1), Jacob Lofland (Texas Rising, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) and Sean Bridgers (Deadwood, Rectify).

The second film, titled The Space Between Us, is a science fiction romance about two teenagers, one the first person to be born on Mars and the other just a regular kid living in Colorado. Directed by two-time BAFTA Film Award nominee Peter Chelsom (Hector and the Search for Happiness, Hannah Montana: The Movie) and written by Chelsom, Tinker Lindsay (Hector and the Search for Happiness) and Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Rock of Ages), the film will launch on July 29, 2016 placing it up against the Ghostbusters reboot, Ice Age: Collision Course, Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, Star Trek: Beyond, Suicide Squad and the untitled fifth Bourne movie.

The Space Between Us stars Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, Scream 4), Carla Gugino (San Andreas, Night at the Museum), BD Wong (Jurassic World, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game).
