Steve Harvey’s Big Mistake At The Miss Universe Pageant

Family Feud icon, Steve Harvey, made a huge slip up on live television that has set social media ablaze with jokes and criticisms of the well-loved comedian.

Harvey hosted the Miss Universe Pageant last night and the Las Vegas event seemed to be running smoothly until a hiccup – or “human error” – caused one of the most awkward 5 minutes in television history. Steve was responsible for crowning the wrong winner!

The third runner up, Miss USA Olivia Jordan, was announced without a hitch. The real trouble came when Steve misread his cue card and said that Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez Areval was the winner when in fact she was first runner up to the REAL winner, Miss Phillippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach!

Perhaps it wouldn’t have been so painful to watch if the mistake had been caught in the first couple minutes, but Miss Columbia received the crown, the sash, the flowers, the hugs and her flag to wave around all before the announcement was recanted.

Steve came back out on stage, clearly embarrassed by his error and said he wanted to “take control of this.” He took full responsibility and was apologetic about the whole mess. He held up the card to the Fox network cameras so the audience could see there was no foul play, merely a simple and honest mistake.

I’m not sure who my heart ached most for – Miss Columbia who had a taste of her dream only to have it taken away, Miss Philippines who awkwardly had to hide her happiness at another’s expense, or Steve Harvey who had a front row seat to the pain knowing very well it was all at his hand!

Yesterday night Steve took to Twitter to apologize again for how the evening finished off.

Harvey wasn’t the only one on Twitter. In the wee hours of the morning, presidential candidate Donald Trump took the time to throw in his two cents. After having sold the rights to Miss Universe to WME/IMG, Trump no longer has a part in the pageants, but that didn’t stop him from giving his opinion. He tweeted:

The Columbian President Juan Manuel Santos even Tweeted about the evening. He showed his support for Ariadna Gutierrez Areval and said:

“For us you’ll always be our Miss Universe. We feel very proud.”

Miss Universe released a statement hoping to calm the waves and diffuse the negative attention Harvey was facing. Their statement read:

“The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on The Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated. Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia 2015, Ariadna Gutierrez-Arévalo, Miss Universe Philippines 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, their families and fans.”

The ladies were both understanding of the mistake. Miss Philippines told the Philippines Daily Inquirer:

“I felt calm when I was called first runner-up because I felt it was fate. But when they announced that I was Miss Universe, I had mixed emotions.I was happy because I really wanted to win but felt sad for Miss Colombia.”

Miss Columbia, who lost the most in the mix up, was also understanding and still grateful for the experience. She said:

“Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy for all [that] I did. Thank you for voting for me. Thank you…”

Pageants are supposed to be a test of beauty and grace, and both of those women were surely tested! I’d say they’re both winners for how they handled themselves in such an uncomfortable and upsetting situation.
