Not entirely sure what to get the coffee-connoisseur in your life this holiday season? The obvious choice for many frazzled shoppers is relatively low maintenance: a gift card, of course. Indeed, Starbucks is expecting to sell a record number of gift cards this year to last-minute Christmas shoppers.
Last year, the coffee giant reportedly sold 1,700 gift cards per minute on December 24. Starbucks also estimates that 1 in 7 adults in the U.S. alone received a gift card during the 2014 holiday season. A recent article published by CNN Money alludes to the year-round popularity of gift cards by stating that more than a third of Starbucks transactions in Canada and the U.S. are paid via gift card.
The company is confident that it will be able to beat last year’s numbers by a considerable amount.
The gift card craze apparently goes beyond Starbucks consumers; they are the eighth most requested gift, according to a National Retail Federation survey. CardHub, a credit and gift card advisor website, says that the most popular choices for 2015 are prepaid Visa and American Express credit cards as well as Amazon gift cards.
Starbucks boasted that more than $5 billion was loaded onto their gift cards in a 12-month period.
Now, if anyone is unsure of what to get this caffeine-addicted writer for Christmas this year…
