Shane Dawson has become a huge staple in the Youtube community.
The video blogger’s character, talent, and fan base has grown substantially since he started his channel back in 2008. So when Shane has something to say…his almost 7 million subscribers tune in to listen.
Tuesday July 7th, Dawson uploaded an almost 15 minute “coming out” video. The video is about as raw and real as it gets. He explains to fans and viewers that he has struggled with himself for some time and wished that he was gay. He confessed that coming out as bisexual, for him, is very difficult because he can’t say that he’s gay and he can’t say that he’s straight. So knowing who he is and where he belongs has been a journey.
After some soul searching and therapy he came to the conclusion that he is bisexual and is coming to terms with what that means. He explained that there is a spectrum and that while it might be easier to belong entirely to one end or the other, there are lots of people that hover around in the middle…and that’s OKAY! In the video he states:
“Through therapy and just through being honest with myself, I am bisexual.”
The video has been viewed over 2 million times since it was posted yesterday and already has over 260,000 likes! If that’s not support, I don’t know what is!
After having a long relationship with fellow Youtuber Lisa Schwartz, he said coming out to her was one of the hardest things he’d ever had to do. He didn’t want her to think that this admission was discounting what they had. He said:
“I’m not completely gay, and I can’t sit here and say that I am… but I also can’t sit here and say I’m straight.”
But despite that unease, he wanted to clarify that his relationships have been nothing but genuine. The only thing that changed is that now he feels comfortable being open to both sides of himself. The video was to help himself but also in the hopes that posting it could “help a lot of people”. Based on fans reactions to his openness, I think it did just that. Fans offered their support, and thanked him for being so courageous.
The outpour of love prompted Dawson to tweet out a thanks to his fans. He tweeted:
“thank u guys for the support. i know ‘bisexual’ is something that gets made fun of & its scary to talk about it but just know u arent alone.”
