The first trailer for The Danish Girl is here! And both the trailer and its star Eddie Redmayne have already generated some Oscar buzz!
The reigning Best Actor Oscar winner portrays 1900s transgender pioneer Lili Elbe. The Tom Hooper-directed film follows the life of Elbe, who was assigned male at birth in 1882 and transitioned to female in the 1920s, was one of the first people to undergo gender confirmation surgery, EW reports.
With the incredible support of his wife, played by Alicia Vikander, Einar Wegener takes a journey to become Lili, his true self. Redmayne says in the trailer that he thinks Lili Elbe’s thoughts and he dreams “her dreams.”And through it all, his relationship with his wife evolves into something worth admiring.
“When I read the script, I wept three times,” Hooper, who also directed Les Miserables, said in EW’s fall movie preview. He added that the script connected him “in similar ways to The King’s Speech, where a man is locked in his body by a stammer and he’s helped by a tender friendship. With Lili I was moved by the power of love as an agent of transformation, even when the world was against it.”
Redmayne, 33, appears in the trailer like never before. He is sporting a curly red wig along with full makeup and he shares a kiss with a man.
He said that he took three years to prepare for the role, PEOPLE reports. Redmayne said that he spent the time learning from members of the transgender community.
“I felt like, I’m being given this extraordinary experience of being able to play this woman,” Redmayne said in an interview with Out magazine, “But with that comes responsibility of not only educating myself but hopefully using that to educate.”
Redmayne called the film “delicate” and “complicated.” It is based off of the award-winning novel with the same title by David Ebersoff.
The Danish Girl will hit screens in Los Angeles and New York on Nov. 27. It will expand to other cities in December. Watch the trailer below!
