Another pair bites the dust…
Multiple sources have confirmed through US Weekly that Sean Penn and fiance Charlize Theron are, in fact, calling it quits. Reports came out Wednesday which told us that the couple of nearly a year and a half have called off their engagement and are officially split.
They were friends, activists and fellow Oscar winners before their budding friendship bloomed into a romance in December 2013. Despite knowing each other for decades, it was only March 2014 when they made their first appearance together as a couple on the red carpet (at the Fame and Philanthropy post-Oscar party).
In March this year, Penn interviewed with Esquire magazine about his relationship with Theron. At the time he revealed that he was prepared, after a couple failed marriages, to finally be a husband again. He said:
“You say I’ve been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today. So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, ‘Without tradition, new things die.’ And I don’t want new things to die.”
He also said:
“I’m self-proclaimed bad at mathematics but I can do two plus two. 53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late. But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling. It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it.”
A month later, Theron also interviewed with Esquire about their relationship and said that she feels she is a “very, very, very lucky girl”! However, despite feeling lucky then, she was the one initiating the split.
Theron (39) and Penn (54) seemed to be in a great place, but celebrity couples struggle all the time. Their breakup came after a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in France, which used to be a place of happiness and beginnings for the pair. France is where Sean and Charlize first got engaged through a romantic, but low key proposal.
