Samsung announces new Ativ laptops

The holiday season is arriving, and Samsung is prepared. On Wednesday, the company announced two new laptops: the Ativ Book 9 Spin and the Ativ Book 9 Pro.

Both have pretty similar processors, but one is a convertible-hybrid (its monitor spins) while the other is a traditional laptop. The Ativ Book 9 Pro runs Windows 10 and has a brand new Intel Core i7 6700HQ processor and GTX 950M graphics card, according to PC Magazine.

It is a little bigger, less sleek, than the Spin. The Pro weighs nearly 5 pounds and measures 14.72 by 9.83 by 0.7 inches (HWD).

Samsung is really excited about the Pro’s 15.6-inch screen. The company states that it has HDR enhancements that optimize brightness and contrast in the screen, PC reports. It also has an outdoor mode that allows use in direct sunlight. Additionally, it has a 4K HDMI port, 3 USB ports and an SD card slot.

Now let’s talk Ativ Book 9 Spin.

The Spin has a 360-degree dual hinge that can turn the laptop into a pseudo Tablet. It’s screen is a little smaller, coming in at 13.3 inches, and it has a touch screen capable of emitting 700 nits outdoors.

Its Intel Core i7 6500 processor is almost as powerful as the CPU on the Pro, but it has integrated Intel HD Graphics. It nearly weighs three pounds, has a microSD card reader, an HDMI port and three USB ports. Don’t expect awesome battery life out of the device; it will likely last about 7 hours.

It is hard to predict just how the new notebooks will do. However, the competition is looking steep. The Ativ Book 9 Spin is up against Windows hybrid laptops like the Microsoft Surface Book (which rings in at more than $2,000) and Lenovo’s Yoga 900 this holiday season. And the Ativ Book 9 Pro will serve as a strong competitor against the MacBook Pro.

The Ativ Book 9 Pro starts at $1,599 for its base configuration and the Ativ Book 9 Spin starts at $1,399. Both will be available in November, and you can purchase them from Best Buy or Samsung.

Samsung doesn’t come out with many laptops in the United States, but the ones that do make an appearance seem to be high-quality. We will see how these two do this holiday season!
