In an interview with GQ magazine, Ryan Reynolds (38) reveals the betrayal he faced after the birth of his daughter.
Both Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, have remained very private with regards to their daughter, James, who is now eight months old. They have shared very little with social media since her birth in December and have been very protective of their privacy.
A friend of twenty-five years knowingly attempted to expose their little family by selling photos of baby James to the media and to tabloids.
“I mean, I don’t think he thought he would ever be caught. But it’s a pretty narrow group of people that I would send photos like that to. They’re just, like, my closest family and my closest friends: ‘Here’s us in the delivery room!’”
Luckily, the Canadian actor “got out in front” of the plan before any photos were actually sold. But unluckily, he lost a dear friend. He told GQ:
“There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”
While the end of the relationship might have happened without a second thought, the residual feelings were lingering. Reynolds said:
“It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out.”
The friendship was already headed down a rough road as Reynolds tells GQ that the “friend” had asked for money time and time again but that he had recently decided to cut him off financially. He said:
“Well, I think he’d asked for a check enough times where I was like, ‘There’s no more checks to be had’.”
Despite the betrayal, Reynolds has seamlessly transitioned into fatherhood and can fall back on his beautiful family for support.
He’s said he would “walk through fire” for James and that he has a “weirdly endless supply of patience”. So it’s no surprise that he is willing to do what needs to be done to protect her. Even if it means ending a twenty-five year long friendship.
