Porn star James Deen accused of assault and rape; fall-out quickly follows

Porn star and self-proclaimed “feminist” James Deen currently faces allegations of rape and assault from at least three different women, and all of them are current or former actresses in the adult entertainment industry. The fall out has already been quite swift for Deen, who is arguably the most/was the most popular male actor in contemporary porn.

“That thing where you log into the internet for a second and see people idolizing the guy who raped you as a feminist. That thing sucks,” Stoya, Deen’s former girlfriend and co-star tweeted on Saturday. She elaborated in a second post: “James Deen held me down and (expletive) while I said no, stop, used my safe word. I just can’t nod and smile when people bring him up anymore.”

Joana Angel, another veteran in the porn industry and ex-girlfriend of Deen’s, was quick to confirm her solidarity with Stoya tweeting that Deen was “dead on the inside” and “literally the worst person that (she) has ever met.”

These initial tweets prompted the creation of the hashtag #SolidaritywithStoya, which other adult performers used to tweet their support and speak out against Deen and his actions.

Deen then took to Twitter on Sunday to deny the allegations against him, saying that they were “egregious.”

“I want to assure my fans, friends, and colleagues that these allegations are both false and defamatory,” he said. “I respect women and I know and respect limits both professionally and privately.”

Stoya is not alone in her accusations, though. On Monday The Daily Beast published an essay written by former adult performer Tori Lux in which she states that Deen pinned her down and struck her multiple times while on set at a porn studio in 2011. The Daily Beast also published a separate account in which Ashley Fires, a current adult performer, explained that she refuses to work with Deen because he attempted to sexually assault her in the communal bathroom of another porn studio.

Since then, Deen has been dropped by Kink.com, in which he used to be featured regularly, and he will no longer be in collaboration with The Frisky where he contributed to a sex advice column called “What Would James Deen Do.” Deen has also stepped down from his position on the board of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee.

Both Deen and Stoya had been relatively quiet about their break-up which occurred sometime in 2014. Both actors are major voices in the adult entertainment industry, going beyond advertisement of their trade and into important conversations promoting safety and consent in the porn industry and advocacy of sex positive feminism.

I applaud Stoya for her courage in her decision to finally step forward, as it has opened the doors for others to do the same. I hope that all of the women involved are receiving the help and support that they need.
