A 2-year-old boy reportedly shot and killed his father in what Alabama police called a horrible accident.
Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector stated that investigators had all but ruled out suicide and other scenarios in the shooting; however, an autopsy was still being conducted, Associated Press reports. The 31-year-old man’s name was not immediately released.
The man was found dead inside the apartment Tuesday afternoon. He had a gunshot wound to the head, and there was no one in the apartment besides the toddler.
Investigators could not find any evidence of a self-inflicted injury or of another intruder, Rector said. Police do know that there was a semi-automatic pistol inside of the suburban Birmingham apartment.
Rector said that it “wouldn’t be a physical obstacle for a 2½-year-old boy to pull a trigger on a semiautomatic handgun.”
The man often stayed at the apartment to care for his son while the mother of the boy was at work. The boy lived at the apartment with a sibling and his mother. Police said the boy’s mother found the man dead at the apartment and immediately called the authorities.
“I can’t completely go out on a limb and say it was accidental or how he was shot,” Rector told CNN. “But the mother of the child called us and said she discovered him and thinks their son may have shot him.”
Authorities said in a press release that they are not ruling out other possibilities, according to People Magazine. “This investigation is still in the early stages,” Rector said.
