Thursday, Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, apologized for the video that raised many concerns this week. The footage showed a PP employee (whom was being secretly filmed) discussing the process of donating infant tissue to scientific communities. Richards explains that the video displayed a lack of compassion by the staff member, saying the organization’s “top priority is the compassionate care that we provide”.
Deborah Nucatola, the employee shown in the video, has not been fired but has been reprimanded according to a spokesman for the organization. After the opposing group known as the Center for Medical Progress posted the video online roughly a year after the fact, the abortion organization received loads of flak from conservatives and republicans alike over what was described as “horrible” and “gruesome” footage, and several investigations were launched in an attempt to expose Planned Parenthood as profiting off of the infant tissue it donates.
Now, Ms. Richards has released a video of her own in response to the ordeal, explaining the misconceptions at play and trying to dispel the false allegations that her group has been facing over the past week.
“Our donation programs — like any other high-quality health care providers’ — follow all laws and ethical guidelines.” explained Richards, adding: “In the video, one of our staff members speaks in a way that does not reflect [our] compassion. This is unacceptable, and I personally apologize for the staff member’s tone and statements.”
Republican at the House of Representatives, Mr. Boehner has maintained that the investigations will continue regardless of apologies, saying “I want them to do their hearings. And once they have them, we’ll decide what’s the proper course of action.”
Richards says the allegations are outrageous, however, and stated that Planned Parenthood will remain donating fetal tissue to help research on diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s – so long as their women clients allow it. “It is always their decision,” she said, going on to illustrate that her opponents are attempting “to ban abortion completely and cut women off from care at Planned Parenthood and other health centers. We will never let that happen.”
In case it isn’t obvious, it is illegal to profit from the remains of aborted fetuses. However Planned Parenthood’s methods of being reimbursed for the likes of transportation costs is perfectly legal. Whether or not there really is a conspiracy at play here, is not yet entirely clear, although in my opinion it is quite doubtful.
