PepsiCo is listening to their customers concerns and are finally ditching aspartame in Diet Pepsi! The change was announced earlier this year but it’s only this week that we will see the change in stores.
Keep your eyes peeled and you will notice the new cans and bottles on shelves. They will be labelled with “Now Aspartame Free” right above the familiar Pepsi logo. Some stores may still have the aspartame sweetened option still available for purchase for some time but the aspartame free variety will eventually take over completely.
The change came as a result of two things. The first is that customers have been giving feedback to the company expressing concerns about their use of aspartame and the dark cloud that surrounds the additive. The second reason is that sales of classic diet carbonated beverages have been on the decline. Those in the business blame the fall in sales on the public perception of aspartame and PepsiCo is testing that theory with this new product.
PepsiCo vice president, Seth Kaufman states:
“It’s the No. 1 thing that our customers have been calling about.”
Sales are expected to jump as the new Diet Pepsi reaches stores but only time will tell if the temporary bump will be from marketing, store sampling and discounts or from customers renewed love for the diet drink.
So will the taste change? PepsiCo is being one hundred percent honest with us. Kaufman says that the flavour will be slightly different but that familiar Pepsi taste we all love will still be in there. It may seem like a scary change for those on the Pepsi train but believe it or not, this isn’t the first time the drink has been changed.
In 2012 they began combining aspartame with ace-K (acesulfame potassium) in an attempt to help the drink from losing its taste over time. This new change is ditching the aspartame for sucralose and leaving in the ace-K. Essentially it’s swapping aspartame for Splenda.
Unless the product tastes completely horrendous, which I doubt that it will, I know that I will remain a loyal Pepsi girl!
