Well, America officially has an idol. After Wednesday’s two-hour finale, America went with the handsome, consistent Nick Fradiani over the jazzy, gritty Clark Beckham.
Fradiani and Beckham opened the two-hour finale singing Centuries alongside Fall Out Boy. And the momentum didn’t stop there.
The show went heavy on R&B and Latin music. Big stars shared the stage with the top 12 including Ricky Martin, Janelle Monae, Jamie Foxx, Nile Rodgers and Chic, Chris Brown, Echosmith, Vance Joy, New Kids on the Block, Michael McDonald, Pitbull and American Idol’s own Steven Tyler.
Even the judges–Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.–graced the stage. They teamed up for a medley of Rihanna’s Diamonds and Bruno Mars’s Locked Out of Heaven.
When the judges were asked earlier in the show who they thought America would choose as their winner, Keith Urban predicted Fradiani to win. “I think by a hair,” Urban said.
When Ryan Seacrest confirmed Urban’s prediction and announced Fradiani as the winner, Nick could not believe it. He wiped away tears just before he sang his new single Beautiful Life.
Fradiani called crowning day the best day of his life. The Guilford, Conn. native told Fox411 that winning was the most “emotional thing that’s ever happened” and it seemed “surreal.”
Season 14 runner-up Clark Beckham said that coming second was not so bad either. He explained that four months ago he was playing on the street just trying to get into a bar.
He said that American Idol has given him the chance to “actually go on tour and record and actually have a career.” He said he could not explain how grateful he is for “this platform.”
The winner praised Beckham’s abilities. He said Clark was “one of the best musicians I’ve ever been around an even better person.”
Scott Borchetta’s label, located in Nashville, Big Machine Label Group is signing Fradiani. Borchetta also promised that the winner would be appearing at the CMA Music Festival and would present at the CMT Music Awards in June. The American Idol mentor said that he would be proud to take either contestant “back to Nashville with him.”
It looks like Nick’s life has changed forever and it’s getting off to a busy start. After his time in Nashville, he will be joining the top five on a national tour. They will be heading out in July.
Idol also announced the audition cities for the final season of American Idol. They will be covering more ground than ever, and they will set up in Philadelphia, Little Rock, San Francisco, Denver and Savannah, Ga.
