NBC has given premiere dates to two of it’s midseason shows scheduled to debut in 2016; Telenova and Superstore. Both programmes will debut the evening of Monday, January 4, 2016.
Telenova follows “Ana Sofia, the star of a popular Spanish language soap opera,” according to NBC. “One problem, she doesn’t speak any Spanish. Other problems? Ana must manage a new boss, jealous castmates and high-maintenance best friends – and that’s all before her ex-husband is hired as her new on-screen love interest. Just like a real telenovela, this comedy is full of all kinds of drama, including love, hate, life and even death! Despite all the chaos, this telenovela’s cast and crew is a family … or, at least, they try to be.”
Developed by Chrissy Pietrosh (Cougar Town, My Name Is Earl) and Jessica Goldstein (Cougar Town, My Name Is Earl), the show stars Golden Globe Award nominee Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, The Young and the Restless), Jencarlos Canela (Pasion Prohibida, Mi Corazon Insiste… en Lola Volcan), Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break, A Good Day to Die Hard), Diana Maria Riva (What Women Want, Short Term 12), Jose Moreno Brooks (Before My Eyes, Doublespeak), Alex Meneses (The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Everybody Loves Raymond), Jadyn Douglas (Greetings from Tim Buckley; Charlie, Trevor and a Girl Savannah) and Izzy Diaz (Redacted, If I Had Known I Was a Genius). It was originally set to air 13 episodes in its first season, but NBC cut the order back to 11 last month.
Superstore is a workplace comedy from three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Justin Spitzer (The Office, Scrubs) set in a “…super-sized megastore,” according to NBC. “Superstore centers around Amy, the store’s most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together, and newly hired Jonah, a naive dreamer determined to prove work doesn’t have to be boring. Their fellow associates include the sardonic Garrett, the ambitious Mateo and the sweet pregnant teenager, Cheyenne. Overseeing them all are Glenn the store’s affable, clueless store manager, and Dina, the aggressive assistant manager who lives by a very specific code – namely the store’s employee handbook.”
“From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.”
The series marks a return to television for Ugly Betty actress Primetime Emmy Award winner America Ferrera (How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2) and also stars Primetime Emmy Award nominee Ben Feldman (Cloverfield, Mad Men), two-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Colton Dunn (Key & Peele, Parks and Recreation), Lauren Ash (Lars and the Real Girl, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Mark McKinney (The Kids in the Hall, Saturday Night Live), Nichole Bloom (Project X, Until Dawn) and Nico Santos (Pall Blart: Mall Cop 2, Nobody Walk in L.A.).
“We’re extremely excited about Superstore and are so fortunate to have the incredibly talented America Ferrera, who won over the hearts of viewers and critics in Ugly Betty, coming to NBC as a producer and star. She’s joined by a terrific ensemble in a comedy set in a location everyone in the country can really relate to,” said the president of NBC Entertainment Jennifer Salke. “We are also over the moon to have the incomparable ‘desperate housewife’ Eva Longoria producing and starring in Telenovela, which we love. Her tour-de-force performance as Ana Sofia, the demanding but vulnerable star of a larger-than-life telenovela, is hilarious.”
“We’re also very fortunate to have a show like The Voice to use as a lead-in that will expose these previews to millions of people, not to mention promotion in all of our highly rated holiday specials such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Thanksgiving night NFL game and, of course, The Wiz Live!”
Both series will air one-hour previews before their debut, Superstore on Monday, November 30, 2015 and Telenova the following Monday, December 7, 2015.
Meanwhile Hulu has also set a premiere date for its upcoming miniseries adaption of 11/22/63, based on the 2011 Stephen King novel of the same name. The series, which consists of nine episodes, follows a man who travels back in time to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The series will premiere on President’s Day, February 15, 2016. Executive produced by King and two-time Primetime Emmy Award winner J.J. Abrams (Star Trek: Into Darkness, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens), the series stars Academy Award nominee James Franco (127 Hours, This is the End), Academy Award winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation, The Bourne Identity), Josh Duhamel (Las Vegas, Transformers: Dark of the Moon), Primetime Emmy Award nominee T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy, 42), Primetime Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones (24, Awake), Sarah Gadon (Dracula Untold, The Amazing Spider Man 2), Lucy Fry (Vampire Academy, Mako Mermaids), George MacKay (Pride, Defiance) and Daniel Webber (Sleeping Beauty, Home and Away).
