Minecraft’s Storymode Will Release Digitally Oct. 13

The release date for Minecraft‘s episodic story mode has been officially announced, with digital downloads for Episode 1: The Order of the Stone coming October 13, 2015 for Windows, Mac, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.  It will then make its way to Android and iOS on October 15, and then eventually to the Wii U and PS Vita.  Moreover, the retail version will release Oct. 27 with an optional season pass to download the later episodes as they are completed.

It looks like it’s quite a different take on the Minecraft formula.  Developed by Telltales Games, the game will send the player on an adventure through the blocky world we’ve come to love, giving you the option to choose the look of your character and affect the overarching storyline.  While it may seem like quite the deviation, Mojang has promised that they worked with Telltale to make the story mode as “Minecrafty as possible”.

Telltale seems to have incorporated as many aspects of the former indie game as they could fit in, bringing the world of Minecraft to life by designing characters and environments around various features like redstone engineers and having the crafting system be a tongue-in-cheek depiction of how characters in this world would create their tools.

“In Minecraft: Story Mode, playing as either a male or female hero named ‘Jesse,’ you’ll embark on a perilous adventure across the Overworld, through the Nether, to the End, and beyond. You and your friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect; slayers of the Ender Dragon. While at EnderCon in hopes of meeting Gabriel the Warrior, Jesse’s friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and you must set out on a quest to find The Order of the Stone if you are to save your world from oblivion.” writes Telltale Games in a blog post.

The game also boasts a pretty impressive voice cast, with Patton Oswalt voicing the male iteration of the protagonist, and Catherine Taber as the female version.  More voice talents we can expect to see as the season progresses include Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West, and Paul Reubens.
