It’s that time of year again! Time for the 99th annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest!
Saturday, July 4th thousands of fans went to Coney Island and watched the competition. Participants have ten minutes to eat as many hotdogs as they can. This year Matt “Megatoad” Stonie stole the title from the previously reigning champing, Joey Chestnut!
For eight consecutive years Chestnut had claimed the title (with a record of 69 hot dogs in 2013), but Stonie has been slowly catching up on him. Last year Stonie came in second place next to Chestnut! This year twenty three year old Stonie consumed a whopping 62 hot dogs AND buns compared to Chestnut who ate 60.
Stonie probably won’t have eaten dinner last night! The Nathan’s website tells us that during the competition, Stonie ate 17, 360 calories, 1, 116 grams of fat and 48,360 milligrams of sodium. Yeah. Insane!
ESPN interviewed Stonie and he said:
“I trained hard for this. This is actually amazing. (…) We don’t just go up there and eat hot dogs. We practice for this. We prepare our bodies. It was a tough contest. Joey brings it all. I had to push really hard to beat him. But I feel great.”
Chestnut says that the contest is a staple in American culture. He says that “people want to watch the hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July. It’s part of Americana”. He also praised Stonie for his victory. He stated:
“I’ve been looking for competition for a long time and I finally have it. He made me hungry!”
Both competitors are from San Jose, California and look forward to this competition year after year. Both of them have moved above and beyond the competitors from early 2000’s. Before Chestnut was the hot dog King there was competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi who won six straight years starting in 2001.
This year the female competition took place before the men dived in. Miki Sudo, from Las Vegas, used Crystal Light to claim her victory! After soaking the buns and downing the hot dogs, she claimed the title for the second year in a row. She consumed 38 hot dogs and buns total.
Hot dog eating may seem like a silly thing to be skilled at, but the winner every year takes home a massive prize of $10, 000!
Congrats Stonie and Sudo and Happy Belated 4th of July!
