Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum presented the award for best supporting actress in a movie. Well, actually Channing Tatum presented the award with the help of the bear from The Revenant.
This year, Golden Globe producers paired up real life celebrity friends to present awards. The aim was to have more organic chemistry on stage. The results were very interesting, to say the least!
Real life friends Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were set to present an award together, but when the time came, only Channing Tatum took the stage! He then told everybody that Jonah couldn’t attend but that as a replacement, they had the bear from The Revenant to present with him.
Out onto the stage tromps Jonah Hill in an absolutely adorable bear hat. From the minute he stepped foot on stage to the minute they announced the winner, Hill kept character. He addressed the fact that his “co-star” Leonardo DiCaprio won the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture, drama. He said:
“You gave it to the lead actor and the supporting actor sits there in the background.”
He talked about a cause that’s important to him as he explained his green ribbon, which represents “Honey Awareness.” Jonah even thanked the director of the film for allowing him (the bear) to be a part of the project. He joked:
“I’m a two-year-old bear from the Sierra mountains and you took a chance on me.”
His strange humor wasn’t well received by all – probably including whoever is in charge of censoring cuss words. However, one person who found it incredibly funny was Leonardo DiCaprio! The Revenant hero said:
“That was amazing that Jonah did that.”
But to give nod to the actual scene with the bear, DiCaprio opened up to reporters about the amazing cinematic creation of the bear. He said:
“I’m not supposed to talk in great detail about how that was done because it was Alejandro [Iñárritu] and Chivo [Emmanuel Lubezki]’s very special work. Alejandro himself watched over one hundred different bear attacks, but what he creates in that sequence, in that movie, is something that is almost like virtual reality – it also awakens other senses – and I think people are talking about it for good reason. (…) It was an amazing, visceral, tactile sort of sequence that makes people really feel like they’re there, and yes it was incredibly difficult to do, but we rehearsed for weeks beforehand for just that sequence.”
The hilarious duo certainly took command of the light hearted nature of the Golden Globes and ran with it. It was a highlight of the evening and if it made the star of The Revenant laugh, it couldn’t have been all that bad!
