Lady Gaga highlights college campus rape and sexual assault in ‘Til It Happens To You’ video

Lady Gaga often displays her artistry through her music and performances in loud, somewhat disturbing ways. But more often than not, she is trying to make a statement or draw attention to a particular message she feels should be heard.

Monsters, get ready for her latest message.

Lady Gaga’s first release of 2015 is a song about “painful life experiences” called Til It Happens To You. Friday’s release came with an emotional music video addressing the campus rape epidemic colleges are dealing with around the country, Billboard reports.

A title card before the 5-minute clip reads, “The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally upsetting but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses.”

The clip depicts unfortunate, but all too common scenes of sexual assault at typical college locations–a dorm room, a party and a campus bathroom–and how the victims deal with it afterward. Dope’s Kiersey Clemons and Twilight’s Nikki Reed are among the cast of the video, which was directed and written by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Gaga collaborated with songwriting legend Diane Warren to develop the lyrics. The song was written for the documentary about college campus sexual assault The Hunting Ground, which debuted in January, according to Time. Gaga sings, “Til it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels.”

The video concludes with each assault survivor receiving support from the community and overcoming sexual assault. The clip also displays a message stating that “1 in 5 college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes.”

Lady Gaga hopes that the video will help victims of sexual assault. According to the new video’s YouTube page, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the song will be donated to organizations that focus on helping survivors of sexual assault.

She tweeted that the song was created for those “all over the world who suffer from painful life experiences.” “We hope u feel our love&solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film #TilItHappensToYou,” Gaga added.

I don’t necessarily consider myself one of Gaga’s monsters (huge, obsessive fans), but I am glad there are still artists like her today willing to try to make a change through their music and artistry.
