Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Collection Announced

At Sony’s Tokyo Game Show press conference a Square Enix Representative took the stage to announce Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, an HD collection exclusively for the PlayStation 4 containing the last dregs of Kingdom Hearts material not to already receive a remaster.

The bizarrely named collection will contain equally bizarrely named content, starting with Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, the Nintendo 3DS game originally released in 2012. The collection will also include scenes from Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover a web browser game released in 2013 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep 0.2 – A Fragmentary Passage -, a brand new scenario taking place after the events of the PlayStation Portable game Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.

This is the third high definition Kingdom Hearts collection released in recent years, following Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix in 2013, containing the original Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories and two hours and fifty minutes of remastered cutscenes from the Nintendo DS game Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. This was then followed in 2014 by Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, which contained Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and more than three hours of remastered cutscenes from the Nintendo DS game Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded. Both of the previous collections were exclusive to PlayStation 3.

Interestingly, several days prior to the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, a Square Enix employee’s LinkedIn profile listed a title called Kingdom Hearts 2.9 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Perhaps this title is an upcoming bundle of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix or perhaps the game’s title was simply changed and the PlayStation 3 version dropped.

These collections seem to be a lead up to the release of Kingdom Hearts III to allow players to refresh their memories of the series complex story, but strangely while the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III is set to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the collections have only made appearances on PlayStation platforms.

No release information for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue was given for either Japan or the west.
