As recent tabloid reports emerged alleging that Josh Duggar, of the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, has a dark past, the reality star made a public statement that shocked viewers and fans.
The TLC series, 19 Kids and Counters, centers on the conservative lifestyle of the Duggar family. As the title suggests, the Duggars are a reality-tv family with 19 kids. The show is premised around their intense religious background and evangical Christian faith. Josh Duggar, the eldest child, like his whole family, has strong religious values and is an active member within his church.
In 2015, multiple tabloids reported that Josh Duggar was involved in a sexual molestation case with five girls, including some of whom may have been his younger siblings. The reports allege that he inappropriately touched the girls when he was 14 years old.
Josh recently addressed the allegations on Facebook, acknowledging his poor decision making as a teenager. In his statement, he said “Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret…I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation…We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.” Since Josh’s statement, other Duggar family members, including Josh’s wife, Anna, have publicly commented on the situation.
Since this has come to light, Josh has resigned from his position with the conservative Family Research Council. Social media is abuzz with commentary about this shocking revelation. Sexual molestation and sexual abuse cases generate enough controversy and discussion as is, let alone from a highly religious individual in the limelight. Who will cast the first stone?
