Forbes Highest-Paid Actress List has been released on the heels of Forbes Highest-Paid Actors List. For the first year ever, Jennifer Lawrence was sitting right at the top!
It’s no surprise that the 25 year old was number one. With The Hunger Games and X-Men both under her belt it would be more shocking for her to not be on the list! Her income for the last twelve months was $52 million before taxes.
Right behind her, in second place, was Scarlett Johansson with a staggering $35.5 million in the last twelve months. But it’s not just big name films that put women up on this list. Endorsement deals have become a huge source of income for many celebrities. Jennifer Anniston has endorsement deals with Aveeno, Living Proof and SmartWater. She placed number five on the list. Amanda Seyfried, also on the list, has profitable endorsement deals with Givenchy and Clé de Peau Beauté.
Third on the list is actress Melissa McCarthy. Her hugely successful comedies have added to her high rating. Next year we could see her bumped even higher with the launch of her new all-sizes clothing line.
Bingbing Fan is sitting pretty in the fourth position. In the last twelve months she earned $21 million. Most of her success is due to the name she’s made for herself in the Chinese movie market but she has also gained a North American following with her role in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Despite incomes that may seem out of this world, the discrepancy between what male and female actors are paid is still very prevalent. The difference in income between Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Downey Jr., both of whom sit in the number one spot on the list, is nearly $30 million.
This pay gap is well known in the celebrity world and some people are no longer sitting in silence. Representatives of Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about the difference in pay specifically on the film American Hustle. While the male leads, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner, earned a 9% cut of profits, both Lawrence and her female co-star Amy Adams only received a 7% cut.
Amy Pascal is a former co-chair at Sony. She believes that the difference has a lot to do with the fact that blockbuster lead roles are not as readily available for women as they are for men. She said:
“The really top [female] stars get paid the same thing as their male counterparts, the problem is the averages don’t work because there are not enough parts for women to star in for them to get paid.”
The numbers represented in Forbes lists are comprised based on information received from Nielsen, Box Office Mojo, IMDB and reports from actors and their agents, managers and lawyers.
