Girl Scouts Return A $100,000 Donation To The Transphobic Donor

$100, 000 goes a long way towards helping young girls to be apart of a supportive community that facilitates friendships and skill building. It’s unfortunate to receive all of that potential, just for it fall through their hands because of a nasty transphobic person. Megan Ferland, the Chief Executive Officer of the Girl scouts of Western Washington received an appalling note following the donation of $100, 000. The donor wrote, “Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t, please return the money.” The bigotry was not supported, and the donation was returned.

Thankfully through an Indiegogo campaign, the money was raised back, and then some. More than $175,000 was raised. The Girl Scouts of America has supported inclusivity, and specifically trans girls for years now. Ms. Ferland told the Seattle Metropolitan, “Girl Scouts is for every girl, and every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.” This is very important, especially because Girl Scouts is a place of structure and stability in a girl’s life, which can be something especially lacking from transgendered girls’ lives when a large portion of the community rejects their existence.

Girl Scouts USA’s chief girl expert, Andrea Archibald said, “Our mission to build ‘girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place’ extends to all members, and through our program, girls develop the necessary leadership skills to advance diversity and promote tolerance.” It looks like the right people are in charge in this case. Hopefully soon the Boy Scouts of America will become as supportive and inclusive as their counterparts.
