‘Game of Thrones’ actress Emilia Clarke named Esquire’s ‘Sexiest Woman Alive’

The Mother of Dragons is having a fabulous year!

Emilia Clarke, actress on HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, was named Esquire’s Sexist Woman Alive for 2015. The magazine made the announcement early Tuesday.

If you’ve seen this magazine cover, it’s pretty obvious why the 28-year-old British actress would be named this year’s sexiest woman.

But an interview with Clarke in Esquire proved that she is also hard-working, humble, confident and she stands up for who she is. To me, THAT’S sexy.

“Half pal, half dominatrix. Half kid sister, half sexy queen. The movie star who plays, in her real life, an anonymous, funny beauty,” Benjamin Markovits explained in the November issue’s accompanying article. “This is the gorgeous balance of Emilia Clarke.”

Lisa Hintelmann, Esquire’s director of editorial projects, said in an email to CBS that Clarke was an all-around favorite. “Emilia Clarke is unforgettable in Game of Thrones and was hands down the number one choice of Esquire’s staff, friends and family,” she said.

Clarke studied drama in at the Drama Centre London. She landed a role on a couple of episodes of the British daytime soap Doctors and a role in a sci-fi film after she graduated.

It wasn’t until her agent gave her a call asking her to go for Game of Thrones that her life changed forever. She was working three random jobs when she received the call.

Her agent had told the casting director that he was aware the “breakdown for this character is tall and willowy and blonde. I know she’s short and round and brown, but I’d like you to see her.”

She said that all she had were two scenes that didn’t give her much, and she hadn’t read any of George R.R. Martin’s books. So naturally, she “did what every good actor does and Wikipedia’d the living crap out of it.”

She told Esquire that the producers were looking for someone who could grow throughout a season and really deliver a character arc. They wanted someone “who could gather strength and show vulnerability.”

If you’ve seen Game of Thrones, you know Clarke did just that. And her performance as the platinum blonde warrior Daenerys Targaryen and the ever-so-loved khaleesi got her some Emmy nominations!

However, it wasn’t easy.

She explained that some of the early nudity and sex scenes were difficult for her at 23 years old. Not to mention, this was her first huge role! She admitted that after one uncomfortable scene, she “needed a cup of tea, had a bit of a cry, and was ready for the next scene.”

Though Clarke is the “Sexiest Woman Alive,” it’s not sex she wants to sell. She said near the end of the interview that she’s doing everything she can “not to be freaky.”

What a woman! Congrats, Emilia Clarke.
