It seems like the story of how Will became the prince of Bel-Air is about to get flipped and turned upside down, according to TVLine. As if the Full House and Xena reboots weren’t enough nostalgia coming back to TV, Will Smith’s entertainment company, Overbrook Entertainment, is said to be in the process of creating a new family comedy sitcom that ‘puts a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of Fresh Prince’.
Other than the fact that Smith is on the project as an executive producer, there isn’t much known about the actual plot and its relation to the original 90’s NBC series that ran for 6 seasons and launched Smith’s acting career. It’s still very early in development.
NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt was asked about the project at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday, and responded by saying that while the network is not currently involved with the potential reboot, they would be “happy to talk to Will [Smith] about it.” The pitch is reportedly being finalized, with Overbrook getting ready to send out the idea in the next few weeks.
Alongside Smith, Overbrook production partners James Lassiter, Caleeb Pinkett, and Jada Pinkett-Smith are also involved as executive producers.
