The Las Vegas Cosmopolitan’s 14th floor pool deck, known in the hotel as the ‘Bamboo Pool’, was mysterious set ablaze earlier today at around 12:15, officials say. The west-end pool’s cabanas and artificial plants served as fuel for the flames as they spread throughout the canopy in the covered part of the area and the fake palm leaves that were touching each other.
Fortunately no one was burned in the two-alarm category fire, however two people had to be treated for smoke inhalation, with one of them becoming hospitalized. There were some broken windows and several of the hotel’s floors had to be evacuated as smoke made its way inside, but fire-fighters were able to put the blaze out within 30 minutes and there was very little damage done to the building. Guests should be able to stay on all floors tonight, said Clark County Assistant Fire Chief Sandra Baker.
It’s suspected to have been started from a cigarette butt, reports ABC News, although the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Cosmopolitan and the neighbouring fire department.
