Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have unfortunately split after four years of dating. And so, their romance dies with Gwen Stacey.
A source close to the couple told PEOPLE that the Spiderman co-stars broke up a few months ago due to the woes of distance. “There was no drama, they’ve been apart while working,” the source said. The source added that “they still care about each other still have love for one another. They are on good terms with each other and remain close.”
PEOPLE reported in April that Garfield, 32, and Stone, 26, were on a break after being in a long-distance relationship. Hey, that’s hard for anyone, especially when one person is thousands of miles away.
Garfield was on location in Taiwan working on Martin Scorsese’s film Silence earlier this year, and Stone has been hard at work in Los Angeles filming with Ryan Gosling for La La Land.
The couple met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2011. And they made the most of a swarm of press commitments together, as a couple, and charmed the pants off of everyone!
Paparazzi followed the two, who tried to keep a low profile. “I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too,” Stone told the Wall Street Journal in regard to their relationship. “But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”
According to USA Today, the couple was last spotted in California in August. USA Today also reports that Garfield said in an interview in September, just before he took off to Australia to shoot Mel Gibson’s WWII film Hacksaw Ridge, that he was “not OK.”
“That feels really good to say to you. I’m really not all right. I’m in the struggle of being a person. I haven’t got anything figured out.” This may have nothing to do with Emma, but either way, I hope he figures something out!
