Disney XD Renews ‘Star Wars: Rebels’, ABC Family Renews ‘The Fosters’

Two of Disney’s television subsidiaries have issued renewals for two of their most successful shows. ABC Family, to be renamed Freeform in 2016, has renewed its family drama The Fosters for a fourth season.

“We have so many more stories to tell about ‘The Fosters’ family – these incredible characters have come into our lives and touched so many – from Stef and Lena’s wedding to the adoptions of Callie and Jude,” said Karey Burke, ABC Family’s Executive Vice President of Programming and Development. “We look forward to more of the groundbreaking storytelling from this creative team.”

The series, created by Peter Paige (Say Uncle, The Katie May Show) and Brad Bredeweg (Tut, Fly Girls) and stars Teri Polo (Meet the Parents, The West Wing), Sherri Saum (Rescue Me, In Treatment), Noah Centineo (The Gold Retrievers, Another Assembly), Hayden Byerly (Parenthood, Call of Duty: Black Ops II), David Lambert (Aaron Stone, The Lifeguard), Maia Mitchell (After the Dark, Teen Beach 2), Danny Nucci (Titanic, The Rock) and Cierra Ramirez (The Secret Life of the American Teenager, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), is scheduled to return from its mid-season break to air the second half of its third season on January 25, 2016.

Meanwhile, children’s network Disney XD has issued a third season renewal for Star Wars: Rebels, its hit animated series that takes place between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode VI – A New Hope.

“We are proud to bring our audience a third season of Star Wars: Rebels, a series that has resonated across generations,” said Marc Buhaj, Disney XD’s Senior Vice President of Programming and General Manager. “The creative team behind the series continues to do a brilliant job in delivering on the key tenets that fans have come to expect from a Star Wars property, including adventure, hope and the battle between good vs. evil.”

“We’re very proud of our incredibly creative Rebels team,” added Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President of Development, Kiri Hart. “The show continues to tell fun, heartfelt, exciting new Star Wars stories week after week, and it’s beloved by fans of all ages. Season Three will see our Rebel heroes face new obstacles and find new allies in their fight against the Empire.”

Created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Carrie Beck (Ghosts/Aliens, The Lost Girls), Star Wars: Rebels stars Taylor Gray (The Dreamer, Bucket and Skinner’s Epic Adventures), Freddie Prinze Jr. (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed), Vanessa Marshall (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain), Tiya Sircar (Friends With Benefits, The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone) and Steve Blum (The Boxtrolls, Mass Effect 3).
