Okay so here’s the thing, generally I try to keep articles as unbiased and objective as possible. Sure I may sometimes inject my own thoughts here and there, but it takes a special kind of story to get me bothered enough to the point where I want to really write in first person, and where else would such a story emerge than the always intrepid reporting of Fox News…
A video secretly taken in Los Angeles last year of Deborah Nucatola, senior director of Planned Parenthood’s medical services, by the Center for Medical progress has gotten more than a few people riled up. Filmed over a business dinner by two actors hired by the medical ‘advocacy’ group, the video shows the Planned Parenthood executive detailing how the company donates unborn infant organs and muscle tissue to scientific communities. The actors play representatives of a human biologics company and attempt to make the practice sound as awful as possible, which is of course furthered by websites like Fox News.
In fact the entire article doesn’t even attempt to cover the story objectively, attaching the words “SHOCK VIDEO” in all caps in the title, and even begins with the sentence “The video is gruesome and appalling” as if the footage actually shows fetuses being de-constructed. The primary reason why so many are up in arms about the video, however, is based on the misconception that the abortion agency somehow profits from donating the infant tissue, when really they are simply reimbursed for transporting costs. Planned Parenthood promptly released a statement attempting to calm the waters, saying:
“A well funded group established for the purpose of damaging Planned Parenthood’s mission and services has promoted a heavily edited, secretly recorded videotape that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood’s participation in tissue donation programs that support lifesaving scientific research. There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood. In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field.” The non-profit organization went on to say that they only donate the tissue with the full consent of their patients and “under the highest ethical and legal standards.”
However it didn’t seemed to help much, with many right-wing conservatives antagonizing the organization. Head of the almost three year investigation project, David Daledien, seems to think there is a conspiracy in the works, saying:
“Planned Parenthood’s criminal conspiracy to make money off of aborted baby parts reaches to the very highest levels of their organization. Elected officials must listen to the public outcry for Planned Parenthood to be held accountable to the law and for our tax dollars to stop underwriting this barbaric abortion business.”
The Center for Medical Progress has since released an unedited version of the video in a response to Planned Parenthood’s rebuttal, and Dr. Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission added his two cents to the matter, calling it “muderous in the most ghoulish way imaginable”. Moore is now calling on Congress and the Department of Justice to investigate, along with LA Governor Bobby Jindal calling on the state’s Department of Health and Hospitals to do the same.
And who knows, maybe they’re all right. Maybe Planned Parenthood really is profiting from the selling of infant tissue (or ‘baby parts’ as everyone seems to bitterly refer to it). Maybe this investigation of the non-profit really is necessary, and many more macabre facts will come to light about their practices.
Or, maybe this is all done to serve the conservative agenda of reopening the stale and controversial topic of abortion. I mean what would you rather have them do with the tissue, throw it out? In my opinion, this is a very beneficial – albeit a little morbid – use of resources and virtually everyone who is opposed to that idea is either under the misconception that the organization is profiting on the body parts or is against the idea of abortion entirely.
Regardless, this isn’t the first time Planned Parenthood has been attacked by pro-life organizations, however this ‘Center for Medical Progress’ certainly is a strange case. Despite their claims that they have been performing this investigation into PP for three years, the organizations web pages have only been up for a few months, their website is reportedly no longer viewable, and there doesn’t seem to be a viable reason for why they held the undercover footage for an entire year before releasing it. Honestly it’s all just incredibly unnecessary conflict stemming from bigotry over a tired argument; really I think Zack Ford said it best in a tweet earlier today:
“Do these anti-Planned Parenthood campaigns actually move anybody, or just energize those who were already anti-choice?”
