CBS Orders More ‘Supergirl,’ Releases Winter Schedule

CBS has revealed its winter schedule and ordered an additional seven episodes for its superhero program Supergirl. The additional episodes brings the season one order up to 20, an unsurprising addition given that the show has attracted a 46 percent increase in viewers compared to the same time slot in 2014.

Developed by Primetime Emmy Award nominee Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), Ali Adler (Chuck, The New Normal) and Andrew Kreisberg (Legends of Tomorrow, Boston Legal) and starring Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Glee), Mehcad Brooks (Desperate Housewives, Necessary Roughness), Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy, The Practice), Jeremy Jordan (Smash, Law and Order: Special Victim Unit), David Harewood (Homeland, Spooks: The Greater Good) and Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockheart (Ally McBeal, Brothers and Sisters), the series is the last of CBS’ four new fall series (the others being Limitless, Code Black and Life in Pieces) to receive a full season order.

The Eye also revealed premiere dates for after the mid-season break, dating the returns of several in-progress shows as well as the premieres of several new programs. Interestingly, the network’s excellent techno-thriller Person of Interest is not among them. Despite universal acclaim, the show has struggled in the ratings (by CBS’ standards anyway) and was picked up for a shorter fifth season of thirteen episodes earlier this year. The episode reduction, combined with CBS’ apparent lack of interest in airing the season in a timely manner seems to suggest what many, including myself, have already theorized: that the fifth season of Person of Interest will be its last.

New seasons of television included on the schedule are the seventh season of Undercover Boss, debuting on Sunday Dec. 20, 2015; the sixth season of Mike and Molly, debuting Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016; the 28th season of The Amazing Race debuting on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016; the 32nd season of Survivor, debuting on Wednesday, February 17th, 2016; and the second season of The Odd Couple, debuting on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

The network also dated the premieres of two brand new series: upcoming comedy Angel From Hell and Criminal Minds spin off Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

Created by two-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Tad Quill (Scrubs, Spin City) and starring Golden Globe Award winner Jane Lynch (Glee, Party Down), Maggie Lawson (Psych, Back in the Game), Kyle Bornheimer (Agent Carter, Brooklyn Nine Nine) and Kevin Pollack (The Lost Room, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause), Angel From Hell follows a young woman (Lawson) who is followed by an unusual stalker (Lynch) who claims to be her guardian angel but may in fact just be insane. The series debuts Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.

Created by Erica Messer (Criminal Minds, Alias) and starring Academy Award nominee Gary Sinise (CSI: New York, Forrest Gump), Daniel Henney (The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris, The Walking Dead), Alana de la Garza (Law and Order, Forever) and Annie Funke (The Intern, A Most Violent Year), Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders follows a team of FBI agents charged with solving crimes involving American citizens on foreign soil. It’s a spin off of CBS’s highly successful Criminal Minds procedural, which is currently airing its eleventh season and will screen its 250th episode sometime early next year. Beyond Borders is the second spin off for the series, following 2011’s short lived Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour, which was cancelled after only thirteen episodes.
