Treyarch’s iterations of the Call of Duty series were always my favourite. They never really changed up the combat mechanics or implemented any features that Infinity Ward didn’t later replicate or already include, but there was one thing that was entirely theirs and made their versions inherently more enjoyable – the ‘Nazi Zombie’ mode.
Of course the developer dropped the ‘Nazi’ part of the title fairly early on, but the essence of the mode remained and it was never fully met by any of the similar game types Infinity Ward added in their versions of the franchise. Now, with an all new Call of Duty: Black Ops set to release November 6th there is of course an all new Zombie mode, and it looks to be the most unique rendition of the survival horror mode yet.
The reveal trailer dropped yesterday, showing off a distinctly 1940’s ‘film-noir’ atmosphere and a star-studded cast – including Robert Picardo (playing the “Shadow man”) , Heather Graham (playing “The Femme-Fatale”), Neal McDonough (as “The Cop”), Ron Pearlman (“The Boxer”), and Jeff Goldblum (“The Magician”). Dubbed “Shadows of Evil”, the new zombie mode debuted alongside a statement by Treyarch:
“Call of Duty: Black Ops III: Zombies – Shadows of Evil drops players into a recognizable yet terrifyingly unfamiliar world, as they uncover the secrets and challenges laid out for them by a shadowy figure, who holds their fate in his hands. Set in a 1940’s film-noir era, Shadows of Evil introduces four unwitting characters – The Magician, The Femme-Fatale, The Cop and The Boxer – into an unraveling experience masterminded by the mysterious Shadow Man.”
It looks like on top of the usual perk-a-cola machines we’re also getting candy dispensers, each with their own odd yet intriguing powers like the tentacle arms and the ability to go completely unnoticed by the zombie hordes. There also seems to be a striking resemblance to lovecraftian horror, with new creepy floating creatures and a large multiple-armed monster that appears to be some form of boss fight. See for yourself in trailer here:
The series’ publisher, Activision, has also launched a contest/fundraiser on the charity website Omaze where fans can donate to the ‘Call of Duty Endowment’, a non-profit that helps fund veterans in getting a job after their military service, which also gives fans a chance to be turned into a zombie in the upcoming game mode. Activision is matching everything up to one million dollars in donations, and the contest/charity drive is active until August 31, 2015. The studio gave a press release, explaining that “fans can enter by donating $10 or more to the Call of Duty Endowment via Omaze for a chance to be zombified at Treyarch and appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC. The winner will also have his or her name immortalized in a Zombies mode level, have lunch with Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the studio behind the game.” Watch the announcement video here:
Wondering about the beloved original zombie cast? Don’t fret, a trailer was shown at Comic-con showing the next chapter of the zombies saga, focusing on the Giant from Black Ops II’s zombie mode and with Takeo, Dempsey, Nikolai and Richtofen all returning as the four playable characters for more of their hilariously macabre antics.
