Brandi Irwin says Tamar Braxton wasn’t the only one ill this week on ‘DWTS’

Apparently, Tamar Braxton wasn’t the only person dealing with illness on Monday night’s Dancing With The Stars.

PEOPLE reports that conservationist and daughter of the late Steve Irwin, Bindi Irwin, revealed her dance pro partner Derek Hough was also sick. Although he was not hospitalized like Braxton, Hough had been dealing with strep throat all week.

Irwin told PEOPLE that Hough “turned ghost-white.” She said that “all the color washed away from his face, and I could tell he wasn’t well.”

The 30-year-old ballroom expert admitted that he couldn’t even recall driving home at the end of the night. Hough had to rely on his dad to get him there safely.

“I’ve had two IVs this week with fluids and vitamins,” Hough said after this week’s show. “Any time I get sick, I pump myself with vitamins. I’ve been doing hot and cold saunas and antibiotics and lots of water.”

Irwin, 17, said it was difficult to get performance-ready this week, but Hough and Irwin are a great pair and you couldn’t tell either of them were struggling at all. The couple received perfect 10’s from the judges for their Viennese waltz on Monday.

“Honestly, every single day I wanted to say, ‘Let’s just lay down’ because you could see the pain,” she said. “I don’t know how he walked into that rehearsal room every day. I just wanted to take all his pain from him. His strength, dedication and determination was mind-blowing. He’s the greatest person to be around.”

So what about Braxton? Tamar was hospitalized during this week’s rehearsals due to what pro Val Chmerkovskiy said was pneumonia. The judges gave Braxton and Chmerkovskiy’s rehearsal videos OK scores, and it looked like she might have been going home.

However, she was able to make it back from the hospital just 20 minutes before the show ended to perform with Nick Carter to a cover of The Beatles’ Hey Jude. “Literally minutes before we were going on for our group number, we didn’t know if she would make it on stage,” Carter told PEOPLE. “It was nerve-wracking, but she came out and powered through being sick. I have a lot of respect for what she did tonight.”

If she had not returned, she would have been eliminated due to the show’s rules. But, she was not.

It was Alexa PenaVega, from ABC’s Nashville, who left the show last night. Despite receiving perfect 10’s for her contemporary number as well as for her number with Irwin, she wound up in the bottom two. And it was none other than her husband, Carlos PenaVega, who was there with her.

“I wanted it to be me,” Carlos said as he hugged Alexa. It was probably the most heartbreaking elimination yet.

Though it was sad, Alexa was happy to go out on a high note. “I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end my time in the competition,” she said. “This has been an experience I’ll never forget. I’ve learned so much about myself and I feel like it has brought Carlos and I even closer together.”
