Boy Grows out His Hair For Cancer

Cancer is one of the most, if not the most unfortunate disease or illness to ever display itself upon the human race. Some people are born with it and as they age they begin to feel its symptoms slowly take them over. Some people develop it for no explicable reason during their lives, sometimes at the prime time at their lives, some others when they are deeper into their elderly years. This illness even kills people, and those who develop it can only be hoped to become “cancer survivors”. The bad part about this is that cancer survivors merely have the illness suppressed in their bodies. It still exists and can flare up at any time.

For a lot of people cancer can be unbearable to live with. You know at some point its going to kill you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. A lot of people however, live meaningful lives with cancer. A big set back for young girls who have cancer is that they often begin balding extremely early. This happens to men as well, but for men or boys it is not nearly that big of an issue. It is easy for society, especially a school full of immature kids to point at a girl and call her ugly, which can really damage the self esteem of someone so young. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of a young boy, a few girls out there with cancer do not have to live with this kind of torment.

Eight year old boy Christian from Melbourne has done something remarkable. This boy grew out his hair for two whole years straight in an effort to donate the end result to other children with cancer out there who are balding. Once Christian was ready for it to be cut off and donated, the hair measured to about forty inches worth of his blonde hair. His Mother Deanna Thomas was incredibly proud of him for his actions and supported him all the way through.

I am proud of Christian as well. Not only because of the reasoning for wanting to grow out his hair, but because of all the immature attitudes from his fellow classmates he probably had to endure. I can only imagine the amount of his classmates telling him he looks like a girl. This may not seem like a big deal when you first think about it, and what this child is doing this for, but at the same time, this is an eight year old boy we are talking about. Boys as young as this are really gullible, and are easily swayed to stop things when they are told by their peers that they look anything short of the ideal. After all, at eight years old, for boys, girls have special germs, are gross, and being called a girl because of your hair may just be about the biggest stick of dynamite to their ego. For Christian to look past all this teasing in order to meet his goal, he must have had to display some serious heart and courage.
