Blizzard Announces Pre-Purchase Alongside Beta for ‘Overwatch’

Starting today, players can pre-purchase Blizzard’s new online FPS, Overwatch, which is set to release for PC and console in spring of 2016.  Those who decide to pre-order will be treated to a special Noire skin for Widowmaker, the cold sniper assassin of Overwatch.

“We’re building Overwatch to be the first-person shooter we’ve always wanted to play, with a vibrant world, awesome heroes, and an emphasis on tightly focused cooperative gameplay,” said Blizzard Entertainment CEO and co-funder Mike Morhaime. “We’re excited to welcome console and PC gamers to the fight for the future, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things teams are able to accomplish on the battlefield this upcoming spring.”

Overwatch is the new energetic 6 on 6 shooter where the player can choose from a large collection of differing characters, featuring everything from a talking Gorilla scientist in a cybernetic suit to a floating robotic monk.  It’s incredibly reminiscent of Team Fortress 2, but it has a refreshing roster of 21 faces to choose from and a futuristic theme.  It’s said to rely heavily on teamwork, reward strategy and experience, provide intense gameplay, and I can’t contain how excited I am to play it. There is a beta currently in progress, with many saying it’s amazing, so if you decide to head to buyoverwatch.com to check out the pre-purchase details; you can check out the beta as well.

One of the characters, 'Reaper', a character who dual-wields sawed-off shotguns while bringing chaos with dark powers.

The studio is also offering Overwatch: Origins Edition, which comes with hero skins for five characters based on their background. It also comes with a few Overwatch-themed content for other Blizzard Entertainment games, such as a Baby Winston (the gorilla) pet for World of Warcraft and Tracer as a hero for Heroes of the Storm. There is also the option for the limited retail-only Collector’s Edition at $129.99, which has all of the content listed above as well as a full-color art book, the game’s soundtrack, and a statue of Strike Commander Morrison with his Soldier: 76 alternate skin.

Accompanying all this, Blizzard revealed an all new map called ‘Hollywood’ that resembles the tour of a movie studio, as well as the final three characters who were veiled in mystery before today at BlizzCon.  There’s Genji the cybernetic ninja, another assassin character capable of deflecting enemy attacks with his blade while relying on agility and stealth to make the kill.  D.Va, a character described as a former pro-gaming superstar who pilots a large mech in defense of her home country. And finally Mei, a scientist who travels the world in pursuit of protecting the nature, using an arsenal of climate-manipulating technology in battle.

It’s all shaping up into an interesting looking experience, and spring 2016 cannot come soon enough. Have I mentioned I’m excited for this game?
