Sorry, Ben and Jen No. 2 fans. The couple officially announced their split, ruining their fairy tale romance and making celebrity couple divorces seem inevitable.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner said Tuesday in a statement to E! News that they will be ending their marriage. Monday marked their 10-year anniversary.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the long-time lovebirds said. They added that they will continue on with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”
People reported that Affleck, 43, and Garner, 42 will seek mediation according to a source close to the couple. Affleck and Garner have three children: 3-year-old Samuel, 6-year-old Seraphina and 9-year-old Violet.
Rumors of a potential split have been in the air for a while, E! reports. There was a moving truck spotted at their Los Angeles home several days earlier, which sparked some divorce rumors.
The two have spoken publicly about one another and their relationship several times. And sometimes, their comments were scrutinized.
Affleck delivered a speech regarding his wife at the 2013 Oscars that he was forced to defend. He was scrutinized for calling his marriage “work.” want to thank my wife…for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It is work, but it’s the best kind of work. And there’s no one I’d rather work with,” Affleck said. Marriage is work, come on people.
In 2014, Affleck attacked tabloids for saying their marriage was in danger. He said that he hoped people would recognize how false stories are in tabloids such as OK! and Star.
The two often praised one another publicly. In a 2014 interview with InStyle, Garner said that the couple had a “mindful” marriage. They were past the “courting” phase and had moved to one that included making an effort to be together and “be loving.” And in 2013, she told InStyle she would “do anything for that man.”
Affleck said that Garner was responsible for stabilizing his life at a time when he was constantly in the tabloids for his split with Jennifer Lopez. He explained that falling in love with Garner helped him “put positive stuff on board,” according to Playboy.
The two met on the set of the 2003 film Daredevil. They began dating soon afterward and were married in June 2005.
Though people and will reporters will continue to pry and search for a reason for the end to their marriage, the former couple is right. It’s a private, family matter. But hey, thanks for the update you two.
