After asbestos was found in children’s crayons and toy crime lab kits, the EWG Action Fund is calling for a ban on asbestos in consumer products. A number of boxes of crayons tested positive for asbestos, which can be extremely dangerous as asbestos has been linked to serious health problems.
Although asbestos has been used for hundreds of years, more and more research as discovered that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can cause fatal health problems like lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
While some people are not concerned by the fibers that were found in the crayons, it is important to realize that the true severity of exposure to asbestos can occur immediately or can occur later in life after being exposed to asbestos even one time. As a result, the asbestos litigation to remove it from homes became one of the most expensive mass torts in American history and continues to be a significant legal issue around the world and a liability for manufacturers.
