Ariana Grande visited Wolfee Donuts in Lake Elsinore, California with boyfriend/backup dancer, Ricky Alvarez. But the pop singer didn’t just satisfy a sweet tooth and leave. Instead, she was caught on surveillance camera’s licking trays of donuts and proclaiming “I hate America”.
She just released a statement apologizing for her actions. Calling it an apology really is a stretch, so let’s just call it a statement. Her statement read:
“I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear that I love my country. What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words. As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole. The fact that the United States has one of the highest child obesity rates in the world frustrates me. We need to do more to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers of overeating and the poison that we put into our bodies. We need to demand more from our food industry. However I should have known better in how I expressed myself; and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure I will strive to be better. As for why I cannot be at the MLB show, I have had emergency oral surgery and due to recovery I cannot attend the show. I hope to make it up to all those fans soon. That being said let me once again apologize if I have offended anyone with my poor choice of words.”
Although it’s a little more than just poor choice of words…she LICKED trays of donuts! It seems like she’s choosing to skim over that fact. Let’s call a spade a spade, she wasn’t expressing her concerns for obesity in America…she was simply being an immature brat trying to make an impression on her boyfriend. But her actions did more than just make her look bad.
The donut shop took the surveillance footage to the police to see if they would investigate but they were told no crime was committed. Instead, the footage sparked the interest of local health officials who then launched an investigation into the shop! Yeah, thanks Ariana! Riverside County Department of Environmental Health spokeswoman, Dottie Ellis-Merki, said:
“During the investigation, the manager did state they normally don’t leave donuts out like was shown in the video. (…) The employee went to the back to retrieve freshly made donuts by request of the customer [Grande] and left the trays out while getting other trays.”
Luckily, that was the extent of the investigation and no further issues came up.
Reactions to Grande’s public statement have been polar. Some fans found her words to be genuine and heartfelt, others (like me) found her “apology” to be lacking any real remorse or accountability. Two people in my same boat are 51 year old Rob Lowe and 68 year old Susan Sarandon.
Lowe tweeted a link Wednesday which read Grande “licked [donuts] because she hates childhood obesity” and added his own comment:
“As my grandpa would say: ‘Yeah, sure. Pull the other leg, it plays jingle bells!’ #Lame”
He also tweeted a second time saying:
“Cannot wait for the new Arianna Grande (sic)/Dixie Chicks jam to drop! #IActuallyLoveAmerica”
“Today, lick a doughnut in solidarity with @ArianaGrande. A sweet, talented, true American.”
Her tweet was accompanied by two emojis: an American flag and, of course, a donut. Love that sass Susan!
Regardless of her disingenuous apology, Grande got one thing right…she needs to do better in her role as a public figure!
