South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been hospitalized with an undisclosed, but persistent” infection on Tuesday. The 83-year old Nobel Peace laureate is expected to be discharged from the Cape Town hospital this week has been battling numerous illnesses over the last few years. Most recently, the anti-apartheid icon cancelled plans to meet with Nobel laureates in Rome last December to battle the prostate cancer he had been living with for fifteen years.
Not only this, but he was also reported to have survived polio and tuberculosis throughout his youth.
Although retired, the icon is still outspoken on the world’s injustices and is widely seen as South Africa’s moral compass.
South Africa and the world wishes him a swift recovery.
