Hey Pitch Perfect fans, your life just got even more aca-awesome! The Barden Bellas are back for round three.
Universal Pictures announced Monday that the musical-comedy Pitch Perfect 3 will hit theaters July 21, 2017. Guess who’s back? Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick have confirmed that they will be returning as Fat Amy and Beca to harmonize once more in the third installment of the franchise.
Though Becca is a Barden alum, she is still joining her girls in what’s to be another epic a cappella showdown. Kendrick took to social media to confirm the news. She posted a selfie holding up three fingers, winking and smiling crookedly. It was captioned: “Happening #3.” Wilson confirmed her return Wednesday, according to People.
Yes Pitches, get pumped.
Elizabeth Banks, her husband Max Handelman and Paul Brooks are also set to return to produce the sequel. This is only fair seeing as they have been working with the original material from the book since 2006, according to Wall Street Journal.
Banks also directed Pitch Perfect 2, but according to the LA Times, it is not yet known whether she will be directing the third film. However, the writer of the first two films, Kay Cannon, is reportedly returning. Universal has not commented.
Banks made her directorial debut with the second film, which featured the Bellas and their venture to the a cappella world championships. Banks hopes to continue to create material in an “authentic, original way.” She told Speakeasy that it will be challenging, but “three is a nice number.”
And why wouldn’t they make a third installment? Pitch Perfect 2 was a smash at the box office and grossed nearly $260 million worldwide. This is $195 million more than the first film’s entire domestic gross! And the film worked on a budget of a measly $29 million!
So what are the stars up to until then? Kendrick will be seen in The Accountant with Ben Affleck in 2016 and Mr. Right with Sam Rockwell this year. Wilson will star in How to Be Single with Dakota Johnson and more in 2017 and Grimsby with Mark Strong in 2016.
