African Union Base Attacked by al-Shabaab

An African Union Mission base in southern Somalia was attacked on Friday by rebels with the al-Shabaab militant group, killing as many as 50 soldiers from Burundi and Somalia.

The militants reportedly detonated a car bomb at the entrance of the base in Lego on Friday morning which started the fight that turned into an hour long firefight in the Lower Shebelle region, about 75 miles south of Mogadishu.

The Somali government is outraged over the heinous attack that has been referred to as a massacre. But the attacks have not deterred the government from achieving its ambitions of peace, progress and prosperity for its people. As was pointed out by the government, they will not bow down to those who “huge behind a bankrupted and fraudulent interpretation of our beautiful Islamic religion.”

The African Union Mission in Somalia is currently there helping to fight al-Shabaab. This attack comes after Wednesday’s attacks by al-Shabaab that killed two civilians and three Somali soldiers in Mogadishu.
