Academy Award Nominees Announced

The nominees for the Academy Awards, Hollywood’s most prestigious award ceremony, have been officially confirmed. This year’s nominees include plenty of familiar faces: Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated again for his performance in The Revenant, a role that many predict will finally net him the golden statue he’s been nominated for so many times but never succeeded in taking home. In fact, The Revenant dominated the nominees, with 12 nods overall including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hardy) and Best Director (Alejandro González Iñárritu).

Summer hit Mad Max: Fury Road received several technical nods as well as a nomination for Best Picture and Best Director (George Miller), a bit of a surprise considering the Academy’s historical reluctance to nominate big budget blockbusters in the big categories, while The Martian is also represented, both as a nominee for Best Picture and with a nomination for Best Actor (Matt Damon).

Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Lawrence are both nominated again, Redmayne for Best Actor (The Danish Girl) and Lawrence for Best Actress (Joy). This is Redmayne’s second consecutive nomination following his win last year for The Theory of Everything and Lawrence’s fourth nomination overall and her third consecutive nomination following her nominations for Winter’s Bone in 2011, American Hustle in 2014 and her win for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. Bryan Cranston also received his first nomination for his titular role in Trumbo, while Sylvester Stallone is on the Best Supporting Actor list for his reprisal of his classic character Rocky in Creed, a role for which he was nominated for Best Actor way back in 1976.

The winners will be announced when the ceremony takes place on February 28th. The full list of nominees are as follows.
