Nicki Minaj is the first solo female artist to have seven singles simultaneously charting on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and her third full-length album, The Pinkprint, achieved No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 as well as No. 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart when it dropped last year. Now, the multi-platinum artist has gotten a series commitment with ABC Family for a single-camera comedy series about her life growing up in Queens, New York.
Set in the early 90’s, the series will follow Minaj and her family’s immigration from Trinidad, chronicling the artist’s childhood and how she began the journey that brought her all the musical success she has today. The star will executive-produce the show, and is joined by Aaron Kaplan, Brian Sher, her manager Gee Roberson, and Kate Angelo, who will also be writing the series. Minaj is also said to appear in some way, although with the show’s focus on her childhood, how she will be incorporated is not yet clear. Perhaps the show will cut to a present day Minaj played by herself a couple times throughout the season.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on. I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.” Minaj said in a statement.
The “Anaconda” star is currently on her worldwide “Pinkprint” tour, but music is reportedly not her only passion. Minaj studied acting while attending LaGuardia High School in Manhatten, and originally wanted to pursue it before starting her music career. She later debuted an acting career with with a role in “Ice Age: Continental Drift”, before moving on to more recent roles like “The Other Woman”, and the not-yet-released “Barbershop 3”, which should hit theaters in 2016.
“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said Karey Burke, ABC Family’s executive vice president of programming and development. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
Production stars this winter in Minaj’s hometown of Queens, N.Y.
The project is the latest from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, a six and a half year old production company known for Secrets & Lies on ABC, The Mysteries Of Laura on NBC, Life in Pieces on CBS, and Instant Mom on Nick. Minaj’s unnamed series would mark the company’s third series on ABC Family, along with the drama Chasing Life and the comedy Kevin From Work.
Angelo, the series’ head writer, is a prominent one with notable shows and features under her belt like Will and Grace, The Bernie Mac Show, The Back-Up Plan, and Sex Tape. It all sounds like an interesting venture, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t much care for Nicki Minaj’s musical work.
